Quick hits, random thoughts, that's the way we roll - been a busy week scrambling around Dobber HQ this week - the baseball prospects guide has been getting full attention and WOW is it big. 500+ prospects broken down, evaluated, ranked and projected - I think the baseball fans will love it!
Hockey fans? Are you sad right now or is it an okay break as long as they figure it out? I'm still confused why the business minds that run these sports feel that somehow a lockout is a POSITIVE for anyone. For myself, I miss it - I have a few keeper/dynasty type teams and was excited to see if the break through young players on my squad could actually break through. Plus, I ended up joining Dobber's house pool and I'm anxious to see how the pool works and if I can keep this team competitive. I've played roto hockey and some H2H hockey for about 10 years, but this is my first pool - talk about diving in with sharks...
Football fans? How's your season going so far? I have five teams - three of them are doing great, running in the top 6 in their leagues (18-20 team leagues) and on a nice trajectory for the playoffs. My 'big money' league ($100k grand prize) is hitting a make-or-break week here. I was running in second place, but then hit two weeks in a row of subpar scoring and I'm falling off the pace. In this contest, it's all about making it to the playoffs after week 13 so a good four week finish and I'm going to be fighting for the big bucks in the cash rounds of weeks 14-16.
As for football? Right now you know if your team is in, out, or fighting - are you enjoying the season overall? I'm finding football to be a bit more 'bulk' this year - and I'm pretty sure it's the Thursday games' fault. It literally feels like we have football all week now. Pretty crazy - is it just me? I'm enjoying the games and the players and working trades and combing FA lists for sleepers - that part hasn't changed!
For news items, there's a lot we could cover, but I want to talk about the recent implosion in Buffalo. I'm not talking about the failure to get Spiller the ball more or Stevie Johnson's minor injuries. I'm talking about the front office BASHING Ryan Fitzpatrick. I'm literally shocked - here's the quote from Buffalo's General Manager, Buddy Nix, "Let me be as honest as I can, I think we really need to address it (the QB position) this year. The thing we can't do is create one. You can't go out, thinking 'I've got to make this guy a player.' If you do, then you're going to be in a bigger mess"
Now, I'm not sure if Buddy realizes this, but Fitzpatrick right now has an 85.6 QB rating, which isn't at the elite level in the 90's that I'm sure he'd like, but still it's better than Carson Palmer, Eli Manning, Matthew Stafford, Joe Flacco, Sam Bradford, Tony Romo, Andrew Luck, Michael Vick, and Cam Newton. Fitzpatrick is throwing so far this year for a 61.7% completion ratio and is on pace for a pretty decent 3300 yards in the air with 30 TD and 18 INT's. I'm shocked that the GM sounds like he's not even trying to motivate Ryan into more production or talking about how the franchise MIGHT have to do something, he's outright saying 'My guy sucks and I'm drafting his replacement next year' - how comical!!!
Right now Buffalo sits at 3-5 and if I'm reading the tea leaves correctly, the GM wants the franchise to pack it in so he can get a top pick and get his QB. Fitzpatrick will be sent out of town and there should be at least 10 teams in the NFL who would love to have him. Watching this soap opera should be kind of fun for the rest of this year and into draft day in the Spring. If I were Buffalo I'd worry far less about my decent QB and try to get him a few weapons and shore up my 31st ranked defense. That's just me, I think I'm sane.
Oh, if you have a spare roster spot, go speculate on Marcus Easley. He was just promoted from the Bills practice squad and his game usage remains to be determined, but there's room on that field for a good #2 receiver compliment to Stevie Johnson. Maybe it's Easley, and for the cost of a roster spot for 2-3 weeks is cheap enough to go check it out.
