If you’ve read my previous articles about Individual Defensive Player leagues (IDP), then you know that I think these leagues are much more fun than standard leagues, where you’re only worrying about offensive players, kickers, and team defenses. That being said, probably 90% of the leagues out there don’t include IDPs in their leagues, but for those 10% that participate in them, this is the weekly column for you!
This column will basically be a synopsis of the week’s games and players you should be targeting. I know that there are many IDP leagues where you may only have a couple of defensive players and others where you can have as many as 10 starting for you. For that reason, I’ll recommend adds in small (1-2 IDPs), medium (3-4) or deep (5+) leagues. IDP leagues have different positional requirements as well. Some leagues will let you draft any IDPs you want, regardless of position, where others may make you draft one DL, one LB, and one DB, or something similar.
In general, the most valuable IDPs are players who rack up a ton of tackles, which means LB are the most valuable, followed by DB, then DL. A solo tackle is generally worth twice what an assist is. Players who get a lot of sacks will be valuable as well. Interceptions are hard to predict so I put less value on players who get a lot of those. Some leagues use passes defensed (PD) as a stat, as well as TFL (Tackles for Loss). Those will factor a small amount in my recommendations, which will be broken down by position.
This week I’m going to list the players I feel should be taken in each size of league, assuming 12 teams in each league, so the small league with up to 2 IDPs per team will be 24 players (12 x 2), the medium will be 48 players (12 x4) and the deep will be 72 players (12 x 6 per team). This list is for future purposes, not necessarily what they’ve done so far.
