Coach says GO DEEP, so let's take a good deep look at Vincent Brown, is he a great target on draft day?
Welcome to the first edition of the Dynasty Spotlight for the 2013 fantasy football season. This weekly series will take a look at a particular player from a dynasty angle. In the dynasty community we are interested in the long term outlook on players rather than just what they will do this season. That isn’t to say that the current season isn’t factored into the player’s value, but it is only part of the equation. This week we are going to discuss one of the young up and coming wide receivers for the San Diego Chargers; Vincent Brown.
Vincent Brown was drafted in the third round of the 2011 NFL draft and while he didn’t play much his rookie season he did post a nice game in week 10 of that year hauling in 9 catches for 97 yards and a touchdown. There were high hopes for Vincent Brown in 2012, especially with the departure of Vincent Jackson via free agency. Unfortunately for both Brown and the Chargers he broke his foot in the second preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys and ended up missing the entire season.
Enter 2013. Vincent Brown is 100% healthy for the first time in a year and it showed today at the opening day of training camp. I personally witnessed all of Brown’s drills today and believe me when I tell you that he could be in for a big year. On one particular play he soared past cornerback Johnny Patrick on a fly pattern and was able to make the catch on an overthrown ball from backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst. In 1 on 1 drills he showed off his route running ability which is something he was known for coming out of San Diego State. At 5’11 and 190 pounds Vincent Brown isn’t the biggest or the fastest guy on the field but he makes up for those limitations by using his elite route running skills to gain separation from defenders and his velcro hands to catch any football that enters his catch radius.
Vincent Brown is currently the 3rd wide receiver on the depth chart behind veterans Danario Alexander and Malcolm Floyd, but he could be the 2nd most productive wide receiver on the roster this season behind only Alexander. If Danario Alexander follows his usual routine of several huge games followed by season ending injury, we could be looking at a WR2 for fantasy purposes.
Vincent Brown is currently being drafted as the 47th wide receiver off the board and can be had in the late 9th - mid 10th rounds. In 2013 he makes an excellent WR4 for your fantasy team with WR2 upside in any given week. In dynasty leagues I think we are looking at an every week WR2 as early as next season. Between Vincent Brown and the rookie Keenan Allen, the wide receiver group for the San Diego Chargers has a very bright future.
